Halfway between NRB's buying and selling rates. A fair reference, not a price any counter offers.

What the rate means when money and parcels cross borders

Sending money home

If you work in the Gulf, Malaysia, Korea, Japan or anywhere else and send money to family in Nepal, the NRB buying rate is a fair yardstick. Transfer companies and banks add their own margin and fees on top; compare the rate they quote with this one to see how much of your money stays with them.

Declaring a parcel's value

Customs at the destination value your parcel in its own currency, using its own official rate, and that value decides whether duty or tax applies. Declare what the goods are really worth. Conversion here helps you fill in the invoice; the destination's customs authority sets the thresholds.

Paying for shipping from abroad

Hyre prices courier shipments from Nepal in rupees. If a relative or customer abroad is paying, the NRB selling rate shows roughly what that rupee price costs in their currency, before their card or bank adds its own charges.

Frequently asked questions

Where do these exchange rates come from?

From Nepal Rastra Bank's published foreign exchange rates, fetched live when you open the page. The rate date is always shown, and we flag a rate older than 2 days.

Which rate should I use for money sent home to Nepal?

The NRB buying rate is the closest reference for what a family in Nepal receives when foreign currency is converted to rupees. Banks and money transfer companies set their own rate and fees, so compare their quote with this one.

Why is my currency missing a rate?

Nepal Rastra Bank only publishes rates for some currencies. If it does not publish one, we do not convert it rather than guess.

Is this the rate my bank will give me?

Usually not exactly. NRB rates are indicative. Your bank, card or remittance company will apply its own rate and charges.
